Auto
Run
" Auto Run" means programs that run automatically when Windows starts
up. Most times, this function can bring us convenience, but it can make trouble
too. So it must be configured properly. Most programs that need to be "auto
run" can be
set in the "Startup" menu of Windows(To see it,
click "Start" at the bottom-left corner, and then choose "Programs"),
but not all of them are here. Some are set in the registry, which is hard to find
for those who are not familiar with the registry. Magic Set can find those programs
that run automatically when windows starts up. Then the user can choose to Disable,
Delete, Add, Run or Browse an item respectively. Magic
set allow the user to disable a program from "AutoRun" temporarily or
delete it from the list permanently. It is NOT recommended to use "Del"
function. If you just want a program not start automatically, just un tick it. This
part also shows programs that are running currently. It can be used to scan those
Trojan viruses. Just press "Scan" to find out. When it's prompted that
there is a Trojan Virus in your system, use "Kill" button to clean up.
Uninstall
It is recommended by Microsoft company that all software have its own uninstall
program which would be used to clear it up from the system, lest there is too
much rubbish be left in the system. However, because some install programs may
have bugs, or the user delete the software manually, some useless item would
be left in the "Add/Remove" part of the control panel. "Remove"
just help you to clear them from your hard disk. there are two ways to delete
them. One is to double-click an item in the list box or press "Remove"
button, and there own uninstall program would be used. The other way is to press
" Kill", Magic Set would help you to delete it thoroughly. Note:
Magic Set would clear the blank items automatically when this function is choosed.
Input
Method
Input
Method is for those non-English version Windows to adjust the input methods of
language-relative characters. Start
Menu
Many items in the "Start" menu can be added or deleted. For example,
to those who don't go on Internet, "Favorites" has no use but a waste
of precious desktop room. "Start Menu" function can help you to disable
most of the items. However,
there are items that can't be ticked such as
"Help", which means it can't be disabled. Besides, you can use "add
new menu" to ad some special items supported in the list to the "Star"
menu.
Boot
If you want to boot the
system in a special way(Boot into DOS, boot into windows, etc.) but don't know
how to do it, you can just choose here in the list. DON'T change to "Boot
into DOS" casually, especially when you don't know how to change it back.
Magic set can't be run under DOS mode, so it may be difficult to change it back
to "Goto windows" mode. You must type DOS command "Win" under
Windows directory manually to reenter Windows mode.
There
are other options to be set for Win9X booting procedure, such as whether DriveSpace
device be loaded , whether disk be scanned automatically, and whether the start-up
logo be showed. If
you have win98 and win2000 both been installed in your system, you may be willing
to change the menu waiting time from 30 seconds to 5 seconds. Or change the default
from "Start up Win2000" to "Start up Win98".
Network
1) You can choose the network connection type according to your system. Those
settings provided optimal settings for 14.4k, 28.8k, 36.6k, 56k and ISDN connection
respectively. For
users who dial up to the Internet, if the line quality is not so good, DNS overtime
can be increased to prevent frequent DNS overtime error. You can also adjust the
baud rate of the COM port according to your Modem and RAM. 2)
The function of convertion from domain names to IP addresses is provided here.
An IP address consists of digits is usually hard to remember, so most times you
use domain names of the sites. But those names must be converted into IP addresses
by domain name servers, which might decrease network transfer speed. You can make
the convertion here and save the addresses in your own computer, which may increase
your surfing speed. People
will save their favorite sites in the "Favorites" folder. Magic Set
will take them out you can make the convertion here. Other sites can be added
by "add" button. Internet
Explorer
In IE function, you can change the keywords that are used by IE to search the
net automatically. The title of IE, the path to Outlook program can also be set
here. If you are not satisfied with your changes, you can use "restore defaults"
button to restore windows default settings. The
right part is specialized for IE 5 only. you can change the right-button content
menu of your browser, or add some programs to IE5 toolbar icons.
Drivers
Hard Disk Cache
You can change the disk cache size according to your memory
size and purpose(3D game, CD recording, etc.). Magic set can assign proper cache
size for your purpose to increase dick read/write speed. CD
ROM
It's the same for the CD ROM. Choose proper cache size for your CD ROM speed.
But when using less than 32MB memory, it is NOT recommended to change cache size.
Even if you are using a 40X CD ROM, the cache for 32X is enough. Visible effects
can only be seen when playing multimedia files. Many
Chromes will autorun when inserted into the driver. Ticking off "AutoRun
CD" will disable Chromes from autorun. "AutoPlay Audio CD" en/disables
audio CDs from automatically played. "AutoPlay Audio CD Program!ħallows you
choose which program is used to play audio CDs, while "Restore" will
restore Windows default program.
Security
There are some
important settings in "Other", of which most are on security, such as
"Disable Regedit.exe", "Disable .reg File", and"Disable
DOS Program". Time format show in task bar can be changed here into 12-hour's
or 24-hour's. You can also change icons for disks and folders showed in Windows.
Choose the folder you want to change its icon, press "Icon" to select
a new one, and press "Save Icon" to save the change.
Mutil User
Note: This function may be dangerous to the system.
"Don't
Press 'ESC' Logon" disables those who have no password to use your computer.
" Auto Logon" has effects in Windows NT/Win2000 only.
" Clear
PassWord" can clear passwords for Screen saver, IE rating and IE5 User.
Screen
You can change Windows display effects and menu pop-up speed as you prefer. "Windows
Animation": Whether allow animation effects.
" Menu Speed":
Menu pop-up speed.
Shortcuts generated by the system always have label as
"Shortcut to". Choose
" Disable Link to" if you don't
like these labels.
" Blank Shortcut Icon" can also be used to disable
the little arrow icon on
shortcuts. It has the same effect as "Disable
Shortcut Icon" below. System
" System" panel show user name and computer name for the current computer,
as well as Windows version and ORKGROUP information. It is NOT recommended to
change system language unnecessarily when having not known your system thoroughly.
Otherwise it may brought up runtime errors for other programs. Default
system folders may not be what you want, such as "My document" and "Favorites".
They can be changed by pressing "Browse" and selecting the proper folders.
Desktop
You can make your computer more personalizes by change desktop icons. All icons
and their titles can be changed as you like. By selecting "Show In Desktop"
and "Show In MyComputer", you can make the selected items show in corresponding
places(on desktop or in my computer). Note:
Some items may not be shown at all places and some item names can't be blank. "System
Icon" allows you to change icons in your system. Clear
Magic Set provides much more powerful capability to clear rubbish than Windows.
You can select the folders and buffers you want to clean, and then choose to move
them into Recycle Bin or delete files. Press "Clear" to clear those
rubbish. History lists of many kinds of programs stored in the registry can also
be cleared. Control
Panel
After uninstalling, some programs may leave a file in the control panel. And some
times you may want to disable others to access certain items in the control panel
for safety. Here you can make those items disappear, and even disable certain
functions of some items. Hide
Magic Set allows to hide items in Favorites folder, Programs menu and disks. Just
check those you want to hide, "Save" it, reboot the computer and you
will see the change. Menu
Right-click the mouse on the desktop. Are there too many things in menu item "New"?
Or right-click a folder in "My Computer", Too many menus? Here you can
hide those useless menus and add some useful ones to the content menu, such as
"Dos Here" and "Explorer Here". You
may (un)check certain file types to be shown in the "New" menu of right
mouse button, and change the tool menu shown to different file types.
Password
What a pain when you forget the password! Have nothing to do with those "**"?
Those passwords are still there and you can reveal them. Press "Show Password"
and you'll see all. Besides, passwords for screen savers, IE ratings and IE5 users
can all be cleared here. OEM
Most computer manufactures have pre-installed Windows and added their signs in
the "Properties" of "My Computer". If you don't like them,
just press "Clean All" or change them to your own one.
Speed
1) Virtual Memory
Increasing usable system memory by using free disk space
to simulate physical RAM can help to accelerate system speed. Virtual memory will
take up disk space. So it's recommended not to set the virtual memory too large,
and space can be
recollected when necessary(You can use this program to set
it.). 2)Boost
up the system
You can relieve system bottle-necks by increasing DMA transfer
blocks and buffers properly or change the refresh rate for DOS programs, so as
to boost up system performance. It is recommended for rookie users to use system
defaults or basic
optimizing provided by this software. If settings are modified
inadvertently, "Restore" button can be used to restore system defaults.
"CPU Speed" option is only available when the CPU can be set by Windows. 3)Install
VMM drivers
Windows 98 doesn't install some virtual device drivers for compatibility
reason. You may have these drivers installed to bring your computer to its best.
